Dry Eyes

Dry eye syndrome is a condition where the eyes feel gritty and dry and generally uncomfortable because of inadequate moisture over the surface of the eye. This can be caused by a number of things, one of which is called Meibomium gland disfunction. This is when the tiny oil glands of the eye lids that terminate at the edges of the eye lids become blocked. These natural oils from the Meibomium glands would usually cover the eye and stop the moisture evaporating too quickly. This is a significant issue in most dry eye disorders.

Dry eyes are also often linked with Facial Rosacea.

Rosacea is an inflammatory condition of the skin where tiny blood vessels populate the face and neck area creating a stinging or burning sensation and/or a flushing of the face during exertion or from a variety of lifestyle triggers such as alcohol and foods. The severity may vary from person to person or throughout a persons lifetime. The underlying causes of Rosacea are still unknown. At present there is no known cure for Rosacea and treatment is a combination of creams tablets and IPL.

Creams such as topical Antibiotics, Soolantra, Azeleic acid, and Mirvaso, can be used in the treatment of Rosacea to reduce underlying inflammatory redness and the small blood vessels that promote this. However, IPL therapy can address many of the symptoms of rosacea and Dry Eye Syndrome.

IPL will break up the vascular component and treat the small vessels that contribute to the redness, flushing and general inflammation associated with rosacea and dry eye syndrome. It will also kill the bacteria associated with Rosacea type outbreaks. It will produce the heat required for clearing the blocked Meibomium glands and it will also kill the Dermodex mites often associated with this inflammatory condition of the skin. The ‘Photofacial’ (photomodulation) effect will stimulate cellular function and hence the gland function also promoting a return to normal functioning.

IPL is a simple treatment. Skintuition has the world class Lumenis® M22 IPL. Treatment involves protection of your eyes with eye sheilds, as with any light based treatment, Then a thin layer of cool gel is placed over the skin under the eyes before the IPL delivers the pulses of light to that area. It will feel warm only. It is not painful. After your treatment you will be able to return to normal activities as usual. We may recommend one or two products to use in between the treatments to help maintain the benefits.
